Suspected drug peddler killed in ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nazmul Hossain, 27, hailing from Gangni upazila, police said.

Obaidur Rahman, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Detective Branch of Meherpur Police, said acting on a tip-off that a group of drug peddlers were holding a meeting at Karandi village in the upazila, the DB team conducted a raid in the area around 3:30 am.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, drug peddlers opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate, which triggered the ‘gunfight’, he added. At one stage, the criminals fled the spot leaving the body of Nazmul with gunshot wounds. Police recovered a shutter gun, one kilogramme cannabis and a motorcycle from the spot.

Nazmul was an accused in five cases, of which, four were related to drugs, the police official said.
