Dockyard fined Tk 1 crore for environment pollution

CHATTOGRAM: The Department of Environment (DoE) on Wednesday fined Karnaphuli Dry-Dock Tk 1 crore for building ship without environmental clearance.        

DoE, Chattogram Zone Director Mohammad Moazzem Hossain awarded the financial penalty to ‘M/S Karnaphuli Dry-Dock Limited’ after a hearing in this connection at DoE office in the city’s Khulshi area.

Assistant Director of the DoE Muktadir Hasan said the organisation was building ship without required clearance from the DoE.

They were also polluting environment through discharging liquid and solid wastages, he said.  

Alongside the environmental pollution, biodiversities of the river Karnaphuli have also faced great threat due to rampant dumping of the wastages, he said.  

The DoE fined the organisation following the hearing as per section-7 of ‘Environment Protection Act-1995’ in presence of its Chief Executive Dr Md Reaz Hasan Khandaker, Muktadir said.   Legal action will be taken against the organisation if they fail to pay the money by June 12 this year, the AD said.    

Mentionable, during an inspection, a team of the DoE found that the organisation was polluting environment through building ship at its dock in Badapura area under Karnaphuli police station around two months back.
