Nurul gets JP nomination for Bogura by-polls

Jatiya Party (JP) has nominated Nurul Islam Omor as its candidate to contest the by-election of Bogura 6 constituency. 

“Nurul Islam, joint secretary general of the party’s central committee, will contest the polls with the symbol of plough,” said a press release of the party on Tuesday.      

Nurul, also the general secretary of the JP’s Bogura district unit, was elected from the constituency in the 10th parliament election held on January 5, 2014, it added.

The JP leader also contested from the constituency in the 11th parliament election held on December 30, 2018 and was defeated by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

In last national election results in all 141 polling centres of Bogura-6 constituency, Mirza Fakhrul bagged 2,05,987 votes with ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol while his nearest rival Nurul Islam got 39,961 votes with ‘plough’ symbol.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant as Mirza Fakhrul didn’t take oath as a Member of Parliament (MP) by April 30 this year.    

According to by-polls schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination paper is May 23 while the date for scrutiny of nomination paper is May 27 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 3, Election Commission sources said.
