BNP standing committee member Jamiruddin Sircar alleged that the government is ‘pushing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia towards dire consequence by torturing her both physically and mentally’.

“Khaleda Zia has been kept in an isolated jail since February 8, 2018 by convicting her in a false case of Zia Orphanage Trust. The cases filed against her are politically motivated and out of vengeance in a bid to harass her,” he said.

He brought the accusations at a press conference at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan of the capital on Saturday.

Jamiruddin Sircar said Khaleda Zia has long been suffering from pain in her left hand and arm and now the pain has spread to her right hand. “Her blood sugar level is not coming under control even after using insulin.”

The BNP leader also lambasted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her recent remarks that ‘Khaleda is gladly taking payesh (rice pudding) and staging a drama in the name of illness’. “Prime Minister’s mocking about the sickness of an elderly politician (Khaleda Zia) is unprecedented.”

He alleged that justice has disappeared from the country, as it is now ‘in the grip of an authoritarian ruler’.

Jamiruddin Sircar demanded that the government release Khaleda Zia from jail immediately and allow her to receive proper treatment at a hospital of her choice.

Replying to a question, the BNP policymaker said they are trying to free her through legal process.

Another standing committee member Moudud Ahmed said the government is trying to shift Khaleda Zia to Keraniganj Jail as part of conspiracy.

Replying to a question, another BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas said they will take effective steps at the right time to force Awami League to free Khaleda Zia from jail.

He said now they have no plan to apply for Khaleda’s release on parole.

BNP standing committee members — Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Nazrul Islam Khan — were also present at the press conference.
