CHATTOGRAM: Local administration in a drive destroyed engines of two boats, which were plying in the river Halda flouting an embargo, at Hathazari upazila in the district on Friday.

Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Ruhul Amin said acting on a tip-off, a drive led by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (AC-Land) Samrat Khisha was conducted in Sattarghat area of the river, the lone natural fish-spawning centre of the South Asia, in the morning.

He said engines of two boats were destroyed for plying in the river despite having a ban on plying of them from March to July as mother fishes release fertilised eggs during the period.

UNO Ruhul informed that they damaged some 14 engine-run boats over the last few months as mother fishes die after being hit by propeller of the boats.

Lifting of sand from quarry in the river is also strictly prohibited, he said.

Mentionable, the authority concerned imposed an embargo on plying of engine-run boats in the river following frequent deaths of mother fishes and dolphins.
