Army man killed, 11 others injured in Bandarban blast

An army man was killed and 11 others were injured after an abandoned bomb went off at Amtali in Sadar Upazila of Bandarban district on Friday.

The explosion took place while they were cutting jungle ahead of a firing training scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Zahedul Islam, 28, hailed from Lama upazila of Bandarban.

Zahedul succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital.

 The blast took place in Amtali area under Sualok union in the upazila around 10:20am on Friday.        

The injured soldiers include Hasan, Tarequl, Asad, Nipun Chakma, Raju, Mostafij and Aref. Identity of others could not be known immediately. 

The injured army personnel are members of Comilla Cantonment’s 16-Para Battalion. They were airlifted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bandarban Zakir Hossain Majumder confirmed the matter.

Bandarban Sadar thana police man Shahin Miah working at BGB’s Baitul Ijjat Training Centre at Satkania upazila in Chattogram said the injured were first taken to the training centre.

Then, they were shifted to Dhaka CMH by an army helicopter.

Panic gripped local people after the bomb blasted with a big bang.

Soon after the incident, army men surrounded the whole area.
