‘Rapist’ killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

A suspected rapist was killed in ‘gunfight’ with police in Garadob Village under Gangni Upazila in Meherpur early on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Yakub Ali Kajal, 23, son of Jalal Uddin of the village.

Kajal was also accused of throwing acid on a housewife, Sub-Inspector of Gangni Police Station (investigation) Sazedul Islam said.

He said a team of police along with Kajal visited a crime scene to recover hidden firearms.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Kajal’s accomplices opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate.

At one stage, Kajal was caught in the line of fire. He was rushed to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police arrested Kajal in the village and he confessed to his involvement in the incidents of rape and acid attack, said Sazedul.

Kajal also revealed that several young men of Garadob Village are involved in criminal activities and they also possessed arms.

Police claimed that four of them were also injured during the exchange of gunfire.
