Two ‘drug dealers’ killed in ‘gunfights’

COX’S BAZAR:  A suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight while another one in what police claimed was an encounter between two gangs of drug dealers in the district early Saturday.

One of the deceased was identified as Dudu Mian, 35, son of Sultan Ahmed of Najirpara under Sadar union of the upazila, while identity of another could not be known immediately. 

Officer in-Charge (OC) of Teknaf Model police station Pradip Kumar Das said being informed, police arrested Dudu from the upazila on Friday night.

Following his statement, a police team along with Dudu conducted a drive to recover drug and firearms in the Sabrang Mondardeil area at around 2.30am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the cohorts of Dudu opened fire on police prompting them to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, the OC said.

At one stage, the criminals fled the scene leaving Dudu in bullet-hit condition, the OC added.

Later, injured Dudu was rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead, he said adding that three cops also sustained injuries during the gunfight.

Police recovered five locally made guns, 13 rounds of bullet and 4,000 Yaba tablets from the spot after the incident, said OC Pradip.

Meanwhile, on information of gunfight between two gangs of drug dealers, police rushed to Kolatali Katapahar area under the district headquarters at around 4.30am.

However, the criminals fled the scene sensing presence of the law enforcers.

Later, police found a youth lying on the spot in bullet-hit condition.
