Garment workers staged demonstration at Merul Badda in the capital on Friday halting traffic movement on Pragati Sarani for hours demanding payment of their salaries of several months.

Commuters were compelled to walk to reach their destinations due to the blockade.

The workers of Star Garment took to the street at around 4:00pm.

They said the authorities has not been paying about 800 workers’ salaries for the last three months.

The garment authorities assured the workers of paying their dues several times, but there is no result yet.

Mohammad Helal, cutting section worker of the garment, said the authorities stopped the factory in April. At that time, they assured of paying their dues by May.

“Today (Friday) is the date to pay the salaries at the office of Sammilita Garments Sramik Federation at Mohakhali.  We waited there, but none of them came. So, we have been forced to take to the street.”

Mahbubur Rahman, on duty traffic sergeant, said, “The traffic jam was created by the workers’ road blockade. Later, police contacted with the authorities of the garment and they assured of paying their salaries within today (Friday).”

As per the assurance, the workers left the road at around 6:00pm, he added.
