Reckless SUV kills 4 sleeping day labourers

CHATTOGRAM: Four day-labourers were killed and three others injured when a SUV entered their house and ran over them at Rangunia upazila in the district on early Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Md Jafar, 35, Mohammad Riad, 18, Md Nazim, 22, and Mohammad Monaf, 52, while the injured were Bechu, 15, Nazim Uddin, 12, and Siddique, 30.

All the deceased and injured hailed from different areas of Hatiya upazila in Noakhali district.

Sources said the victims came from the offshore island Hatiya to work as day-labourers at brick kilns in the Rangunia upazila a few months back.

The accident occurred when a wood-laden Jeep, locally known as Chander Gari, entered a roadside tin-roofed house of the workers losing control over steering in Gabtal area under Islampur union of the upazila around 4:00am.

The Jeep ran over some workers who were sleeping inside the house at that time. The accident left four of the workers killed on the spot and three others injured critically, the sources said.

The injured were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital and undergoing treatment there, ASI Alauddin Talukder of the hospital police outpost.

Sub Inspector (SI) Abu Bashar of concerned Rangunia police station said on information, they rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.

Though the Jeep was seized its driver managed to flee, he said adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this connection.
