BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Wednesday the government has failed to control prices of essential commodities ahead of Ramadan.

“A few days ago, the commerce minister, at a press conference, announced that  prices of essentials will not go up ahead of Ramadan. But, prices of all commodities started soaring a day after the minister’s announcement,” he said.

The BNP leader was addressing a press briefing at the central office of the party at Nayapaltan in the capital.

He said, “People of low-income group are going through immense sufferings for rise in prices of essential commodities. We condemn the government for its failure to control prices of essential commodities before Ramadan,” he said.

Asked whether they will announce any programme to protest the price-hike of essentials, Rizvi said that they are registering their protest through the press conference. “We’ll work out programmes to make people aware about it.”

He said, “Public life is at stake due to supply of ‘contaminated’ water by Dhaka WASA. “Waterborne diseases like diarrhoea and typhoid have taken an epidemic turn in Dhaka city, but the WASA authority is indifferent to the danger.”

The BNP leader protested and condemned the ‘human-destroying’ policy of the government institute (WASA) and demanded of the government to ensure pure water supply without further delay.
