Zayan laid to rest

Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim’s grandson Zayan Chowdhury, who was killed in the bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Sunday, was laid to rest at Banani graveyard on Wednesday.

His namaz-e-janaza was held at Banani Chairmanbari playground after Asr prayers.

Hundreds of people, including relatives and Awami League leaders attended the janaza, Imrul Kayes, personal secretary of Sheikh Selim, said.

After arrival of Zayan’s body, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to Sheikh Selim’s Banani residence at around 2:40 pm to console the members of his family.

The prime minister stayed in the house for around an hour. A gloomy atmosphere prevailed there following the tragic death of the minor boy. The premier also prayed for the departed soul of the eight-year-old boy.

Sheikh Selim is a paternal cousin to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Zayan is the son of Moshiul Haque Chowdhary and Sheikh Amena Sultana Sonia, the daughter of Sheikh Selim.

The parents with their two children went to Sri Lanka on holiday. The mother and her younger son were staying in their hotel room when the blast rocked the hotel.

The body of Zayan was brought to Dhaka from Colombo on Wednesday afternoon.

A Sri Lankan Airline flight carrying the body of Zayan landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:45pm. The body was taken to Sheikh Selim’s Banani residence at 1:30pm.

Zayan’s father Moshiul, who was injured in the blast, is still in a critical condition. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Sri Lanka. Splinter injuries affected his kidney and liver seriously.
