TANGAIL: A processed tobacco-laden truck was seized by the team of National Board of Revenue (NBR) under Dhaka West VAT Division at the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge in Tangail on Sunday.
As per invoice found, the truck was carrying dust or odour of tobacco but the NBR officials found that it was actually carrying processed tobacco for producing illegal cigarettes. The revenue officials said the processed tobacco is usable as the main raw material for cigarette manufacturing.
The truck was heading to Mymensingh from Bheramara of Kushtia. Based on secret information, a VAT team of NBR was following the truck. When it reached the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge it was halted with the help of local police.
According to the invoice found, the product was brought to Netrakona in the name of Rahman Traders but when the recipient’s address was verified it was found that the address was false. Besides, NBR investigating officers have found the invoices of Global Leaf Tobacco in Barakhada area of Trimohoni in Kushtia. Even, the appropriate VAT invoices were not carried in this case. The goods were loaded from Kushtia by using false invoice for the production of illegal cigarettes evading VAT. It is believed that this tobacco has been brought in for using an illegal cigarette factory.
After the seizure, it was sent to Tangail VAT office.
Meanwhile, a case has been filed due to attempt to dodge VAT and use illegal goods. Further legal action will be taken after the necessary investigation in this regard, said VAT official.
On April 11 last, a team of Dhaka West VAT, in collaboration with RAB, unearthed an illegal cigarette factory in the Kamarthi village of Kalihati upazila of Tangail. The factory was running under the signboard of auto rice mill. The NBR officials then seized counterfeit cigarettes, filters, processed tobacco and machines from the factory. It was possible to make two million sticks of cigarettes a day by using the high quality machineries installed in the factory. As a result, the amount of monthly VAT evasion would be around Tk 51 crore.
The counterfeit cigarette of British American Tobacco brand was being produced from that factory.
NBR officials said the confiscated tobacco is similar to previous seized tobacco. They assumed that there are more illegal factories in the greater Mymensingh area.
