The election commission (EC) begins the voter list update process throughout the country today.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda is scheduled to inaugurate the voter list update programme in Rajbari.

Transgender people can now be voters as “hijras” for the very first time in the country's history.

Previously, they were registered only as women or men on the national voters list, as there was no third option for the people of this community.

The Election Commission (EC) has recently added “hijra” along with the other two gender categories, “male and female”, on the voter registration form.

Information about 8 million citizens will be collected in this round. They will collect data on citizens who are over 16 years old - born on or before January 1, 2003.

They will be enrolled as voters once they are 18 years old, said SM Asaduzzaman, EC Joint Secretary. After the end of the door-to-door data collection till May 13, registration and collection of the citizens’ fingerprints at designated centres will continue from May 25 to October 30.

More than 40,000 polling stations of the last general election will be used in the registration process. The EC has assigned 52,500 data collectors, 10,500 supervisors, and 780 assistant registration officers for the electoral roll update.

The dates for area-wise data collection will be announced later. Dead voters will be dropped from the voter list during the process while citizens will also be able to file applications for transferring their electoral areas.

Bangladesh has around 104.15 million voters now – over 52.5 million male and about 51.65 million female.
