Terrorist killed, seven cops hurt in Ctg ‘gunfight’

CHATTOGRAM: A terrorist was killed and seven cops were injured in a ‘gunfight’ in the city’s Asadganj area on Monday.     

The deceased was identified as Wasim Uddin, 30, son of Abdus Sabur of Mian Sawdagar Colony in Kalabagicha area under Kotwali police station.  

Wasim was an accused of at least 14 cases filed on different charges including for robbery, snatching and attacking on police.

Assistant Commissioner (AC-Kotwali Zone) Noble Chakma of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) told the daily sun that on information, they conducted a drive in the Asadganj area, popularly known as Shutki Palli, at around 4:30pm.  

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, criminals led by Wasim opened fire and pelted brickbats on police personnel prompting them to retaliate with bullet resulting in a gunfight, he said.

At one stage of the gunfight, criminals fled the scene leaving Wasim in bullet-hit condition, the police officer said adding that seven cops were injured during the gunfight. 

Bullet-hit Wasim was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries at around 7:00pm, said Inspector (Investigation) Md Kamruzzaman of the Kotwali police station.

Of the injured cops, five were admitted to the CMCH while rest others were released after giving primary treatment.

A light gun (LG) and two rounds of bullet were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, he said.

Wasim was a warranted accused, said the inspector adding that drives were going on to arrest his cohorts.
