Govt to recruit 6,000 docs soon: Minister

Nutrition Week begins today

The government will recruit around 6,000 physicians to government hospitals immediately, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said on Sunday.

The minister made the disclosure while speaking at a press conference at his secretariat office in the capital on the observance of the National Nutrition Week-2019.

Sixty percent of the doctors will be women, he said in reply to a question.

The government will observe the National Nutrition Week 2019 from April 23 to April 29, the minister said.

He said various programmes, including nutrition fair, discussion and rally will be held across the country in observance of the week.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already announced the inauguration of the National Nutrition Week 2019 at the inaugural function of ‘National Health Service Week 2019’ held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) on April 16, Zahid Maleque said.

If poverty reduces and women empowerment is ensured, the problem of malnutrition will come down in the country, the health minister said.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had signed the order of Bangladesh National Nutrition Council (BNCC) on April 23 in 1975, the minister also said.

The country is now a role model of development in health and nutrition sector in the world, he also said.

The government will take school health programme immediately to ensure nutrition for the schoolchildren across the country, the minister said.

At the press conference, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ministry Dr Murad Hassan said nutrition plays important role in building a strong nation.

As per election manifesto, the government will reach nutrition and health services at the doorstep of people, Murad Hassan said.

Health Services Division Secretary Md Asadul Islam, Medical Education and Family Welfare Division Secretary GM Saleh Uddin, Health Services Division Additional Secretary Habibur Rahman Khan and Director General of Bangladesh National Nutrition Council (BNCC) Md Shah Nawaz were also present on the occasion.

There will be fair, rally, discussion and seminar on the first day of the weeklong programme. 

Apart from this, different programmes including nutritious food cooking competition, nutrition Olympiad, counseling, seminar and discussion to create awareness among people will be held on the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth days of the week.

A prize giving programme will be held on the closing day on 29 April.
