The Dhaka airport authorities on Thursday detained a former upazila chairman for entering the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka allegedly with a pistol and 10 bullets without any declaration.

The detainee was Molla Mujibar Rahaman Shamim, a former chairman of Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat.

Mujibar entered the terminal to fly to Khulna on a Novo Air flight scheduled to take off at 3:20pm, Noor-e-Alam Siddiqi, director of Aviation Security (AVSEC), at the Dhaka airport.

Detecting the pistol and 10 bullets in his possession, the aviation security personnel handed Mojibar over to police, he added.

According to the rules, an individual must inform the airport authorities about carrying arms and ammunitions while entering the airport.

Earlier on March 25, ABM Majharul Anam, president of Darussalam Unit AL, was detained by the airport security officials and later handed over to police for carrying 44 rounds of bullets.

On March 22, Police detained Mujibur Rahman, agricultural affairs secretary of Satkhira district AL, for entering the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport allegedly along with a pistol and 32 bullets without any declaration.

On March 16, police also held AHM Nurul Islam, bodyguard of Probashi Palli Group chairman, at the same terminal for carrying a shotgun without informing the authorities about it. He was too scheduled to travel to Jashore from Dhaka on a Novoair flight.

In another incident on March 11, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh detained Mohammad Masud Chowdhury, chairman of Phulsahara Union Parishad in Jashore Chougachha upazila, for carrying a pistol and seven bullets.

Masud is also the general secretary of Chougachha upazila AL.

The arrests come after a passenger tried to hijack a Dubai-bound Bangladesh Biman flight on February 24, using a toy pistol and a bomb-like material. The incident raised serious questions over security at the Dhaka airport.
