Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif backtracked on his statement on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release on parole.

“Though the issue of releasing Khaleda Zia on parole has been raised, she is yet to appeal for it. If she appeals, the home ministry will take necessary steps,” he said at a seminar on fire safety organised by Awami League Science and Technology Affairs Sub-committee at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital on Monday.

On Sunday, Hanif said that there is no such situation created for the release of the convicted BNP chief on parole. Hanif also alleged that the main aim of BNP is to politicize Khaleda Zia’s treatment.

“After Khaleda Zia’s conviction, the government gave her privileges of medical treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University as a former prime minister,” he said. Hanif also said that Khaleda Zia is getting more privileges in prison which is unprecedented in the world.

AL Science and Technology Affairs Sub-committee Chairman Hossain Monsur presided over the event while AL science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur and former chairman of RAJUK Nurul Huda, among others, spoke.
