Two suspected muggers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the capital’s Tejgaon area in the early hours of Friday.

The deceased were identified as Naim, 35, and Jamal, 38, both members of an inter-district carjacking gang, said company commander of RAB-2, Mohiuddin Faruque, also an additional superintendent of police.

He informed that RAB arrested two people—Hanif and Litu—from Gazipur in connection with their suspected involvement in carjacking on Thursday night.

After interrogation, RAB came to know that the members of a carjacking syndicate will hand over a snatched vehicle to its owner in exchange of money on Thursday night. Soon, the RAB team reached the spot and besieged them.

Sensing presence of the elite force, the suspected  muggers opened fire.

In retaliation, the RAB members fired back, triggering a ‘gunfight’ between them, the RAB official informed.

After the ‘gunfight’, Jamal and Naim were found bullet-hit and rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where on-duty doctors declared them dead, he added.

The elite force seized a pistol, two sharp weapons and several bullets from the spot.
