Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam blamed frequent road accidents in the capital on lack of public awareness and violation of traffic rules.

“That’s the reason why we want to form a team comprising students who will work to raise awareness among people,” he said.

The DNCC mayor came up with the remarks after inaugurating the three-day event titled ‘Law Fest Season II’ at North South University (NSU) at Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital on Monday. North South University Law & Mooting Society, a student organisation of the private university, organised the second installment of their signature event which consists of nine different segments.

The newly elected mayor also urged students to come forward to turn Dhaka into a safe and livable city.

The session was chaired by NSU Vice-Chancellor Prof Atiqul Islam while Pro-VC (Designate) Prof. Dr. G.U. Ahsan and two deans -- Mohammed Shajahan and Benajir Ahmed, were present, among others.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Atiqul Islam said, “We have many laws, but there is no proper enforcement.”

He also informed the DNCC mayor that they will form a Disaster Management Team which will work with the mayor to improve social development and public relations in the city.

At least eight stalls have been set up and visitors can collect various information from them on different laws and their applications.
