Safety for RMG workers demanded

Garments Sromik Front, an association of Bangladesh Ready-Made Garment (RMG) workers, demanded improved safety at factories and punishments to those responsible for Rana Plaza disaster.

The call was made at a rally held in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Monday.

They also demanded April 24, the day of the Rana Plaza disaster, to be declared as National Garment Workers’ Mourning Day.

In the rally, they also press their nine-point demands including the need for complying with the building code in constructing garment factory buildings.

President of the association Ahsan Habib Bulbul presided over the programme.

To make their demands fulfilled, leaders of the association announced further programme to be held in Manikganj and Narayanganj districts.

In the rally, they also declared a sit-in programme in front of Rana Plaza at Savar on April 12.

Around 1,100 people, mostly workers, were killed and over 2,500 injured in the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory building at Savar in Dhaka on April 24, 2013.

Among others, vice-president of the association Kahlequzzaman Lipon was present.
