Rowing held in Hatirjheel Lake

Making the 49th Independence Day of the country, a traditional boat race locally known as ‘Nouka Baich’ was held in Hatirjheel Lake of the capital on Tuesday.

Bangladesh Rowing Federation arranged the competition titled “Independence Day Boat Race 2019” for the city dwellers.

A total of 11 male and four female teams took part in the event while thousands of onlookers enjoyed the sports on the two banks of lake cheering and applauding.

The competition began from the FDC and ended at the same point.

Earlier, Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim inaugurated the event by releasing balloons. 

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, he said, “Rowing is part of Bengali culture and I want the culture to exist longer.”

The minister also said, “Boat is one of the integral parts of Bengali culture. In villages, rowing is a special part of any festival. It gives us immense pleasure. But for various reasons, the tradition is on the verge of extinction. We have to save it and our prime minister is also enthusiastic about upholding the culture.”    

President of Bangladesh Rowing Federation Advocate Mollah Mohammad Abu Kawser, Managing Director of Masud Steel Design BD Ltd Masudur Rahman and others also spoke on the occasion.
