National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque called upon all stakeholders to transform the country into a safe place for children.
He underscored the need for concerted effort, following ideologies of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in this regard.He said this while addressing at a discussion titled ‘Philosophy of Bangabandhu: National Children’s Day’ held at the commission’s head office in the capital on Monday.
“We have to work together following ideologies of Bangabandhu to transform Bangladesh into a safe place for the children. United effort is needed to stop child labour, marriage and violence against them.”
Children are still exposed to violence and aggression despite various steps taken by Awami League government, he said.
He expressed deep concern over delay in execution of killers of children Razon and Rakib.
The law enforcing agencies and other officials concerned will have to work properly to ensure safety and protect rights of the children, he opined.
Speaking as the special guest, Selina Hossain, novelist and chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Academy, said: “The Children Act, 1974 bears testimony to Bangabandhu’s love and concern for children. Father of the Nation also nationalised 37,000 primary schools for child education”.The children should get Bangladesh as safe abode and be imbued with the ideology and principle of Bangabandhu, she added.
NHRC full-time member Md Nazrul Islam, Shishu Odhikar Forum director Abdus Shahid Mahmud and Save the Children director Abdullah Al Mamun also spoke on the event.
