Six injured in attack on Ctg polling centre

CHATTOGRAM: Six persons including two cops were injured when criminals attacked and opened fire over taking control of a polling centre during the upazila parishad election at Chandanish upazila in the district on Sunday.

Of the cops, one identified as Constable Farhad was injured with bullet while another Sub Inspector (SI) Shah Alam with brickbat.

Sources said a group of criminals numbering around 100 attempted to take control over Purbo Chandanaish Government Primary School centre during the polling around 9:30 am.

The on-duty cops fired blank-shots to disperse the criminals. But, the criminals retaliated with bullet resulting in a clash.

They also pelted brickbats to police at that time.

At one stage, the criminals who were reportedly loyal to the ruling Awami League-backed Chairman candidate AKM Nazim Uddin left the scene.

The clash left Constable Forhad injured with bullet while SI Shah Alam with brickbat.

The duo was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment, said the sources.

Of them, Forhad was shifted to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Dhaka by a helicopter in the afternoon, said Nayek Hamid of the hospital police outpost.

Chattogram district Additional Superintendent of Police (South) Afruzul Hoque Tutul said voting remained suspended for around a-half hour due to the incident.

Five persons were arrested from the area in this connection, he said.

On the other hand, five persons were arrested by concerned magistrates from Patiya and Banshkhali upazilas for casting fake votes.

Of them, four adolescents including an immediate past SSC examinee were arrested from Purbo Ratanpur Primary School centre in the Patiya upazila while rest one from Chambal High School centre in Banshkhali upazila in the district.

Later, they were handed over to the law enforcement agencies.

Excluding the incidents, elections in four upazilas of South Chattogram in the third phase of the 5th Upazila Parishad General Election were held almost peacefully on Sunday. 

Sources said though there were schedule of holding the election at six upazilas under the South Chattogram, candidates for the all three posts including chairman were elected unopposed at Anwara upazila earlier.

Besides, voting at Lohagara upazila was postponed following a court order.

The upazilas whether election was held on Sunday include Patiya, Boalkhali, Chandanish and Banshkhali.

A total of 12 candidates mostly from the ruling Awami League (AL) contested for the post of chairman while 23 candidates for the posts of vice chairman in the four upazilas.
