Some government offices and private organizations have turned a deaf ear to the repeated calls of the Railway Ministry for paying their overdue electricity bills.
Sources said thirty nine non-railway organisations including the government offices, ATM booths of Banks and shops have yet to pay their electricity bills that amount to Tk91,55,413 to the Ministry of Railways.The unpaid bills add salt to the wounds of the perennial unprofitable sector of the government as its officials concerned are hardly seen to go for punitive actions due to the non-payment of the utility bills.
Even the rail officials do not disconnect electricity connections to those offices and shops for their unpaid bills that piled up in Fiscal Year 2011-12 and 2012-13.
Three government offices and thirty six non-government offices have electricity bills due to the Ministry of Railways.
A total of Tk80,78,058 remain unpaid by the three government offices while Tk10,77,355 by private outlets.
The government offices are Obangali Camp in Jamalpur that owes Tk 13,39,590, GRP police station and barrack in Dhaka Tk35,73,965, and ATM ICD in Dhaka Tk31,64,503.
The non-railway outlets are located in Akhaura, Bhairab Bazar, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet area.Ten shops are situated in Akhaura Railway Station including Hindu Hotel, Muslim Hotel (Ali Azam), Muslim Hotel (Lal Mia Fakir), Sadharan Bhojonaloy, Sumon Fast Food, Public toilet, Fast Food and Phone Fax Shop – all having dues over Tk1,63,053.
Four shops in Bhairab Bazar including Bilash Hotal, Matin Book Stall and Muslim hotel have dues over Tk65,574.
Ten outlets in Kamlapur station in Dhaka including Razu Enterprise, Mahbub Ali Institute, Dutch Bangla Bank ATM booth, Pragati Caterers, Sirajul Islam Denting machine and Coffee Shop, Messer’s Robi Axiata, Safin Enterprise and SD Kalyan Trust have dues over Tk88,269.
Four Shops in Mymensingh including Anwar Hossain Stationery, Fast Food and Stationery Shop and Sathi Grantha Bitan have dues over Tk19,783.
Nine outlets in Sylhet station including Mulim Tea Stall, Iqbal Hossain Tea Stall, Intaz Ali Tea store, Rashid Ali Tea Stall, FRK Enterprise owe over Tk67668.
Admitting the non-payment of utility bills by a few private and government offices, Secretary to the Ministry of Railways Md Mofazzel Hossain told daily sun they are aware of such electricity bill evasions.
“We will take action against them through investigation. We are also working to solve such problems relating to the railways,” he said.
