Bangladesh Test and Twenty20 skipper Shakib Al Hasan said that Tigers need to emphasise on need-based training ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019 as the tour of New Zealand provided them with ample of evidence of Tigers lackings.

Shakib missed the New Zealand tour due to finger injury and currently is busy in Indian Premier League for his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.

When asked whether winning the tri-nation series in Ireland is a possible, Shakib stated that it will be good if they can win there but most importantly they should prepare to do well in World Cup

“It is a great advantage if you win tournament anywhere,” Shakib was quoted in a leading Bengali daily. “But at the same time we should prepare for the World Cup,” he said.

“I think, New Zealand tour was a warning sign for us. England will have the same sort of wickets and same conditions. We did not do well in New Zealand, so it is very important for us to find out the issues which led to the failure. To make sure that things pan out better in the World Cup we have to take the right decision now. And the most important issue is to have a plan beforehand,” he said adding playing nine matches will make it difficult for Tigers to progress beyond the group stage.

“This tournament will be very difficult due to its format. In other formats, you may progress ahead after winning one or two matches, but this time it is not possible. I think we have to win at least five matches to move to the next stage, it may take even more. Winning five matches will not be easy without playing good cricket consistently. That’s why I am saying that we need to take some good decisions. We should go ahead with the right plans. Otherwise, we will suffer in the World Cup,” he said.

“Everyone likes to dream big. But nothing is gained if you only dream. You have to work hard to fulfill your dreams,” he said.

Shakib added that he is fine and hopefully he will be totally fit ahead of the World Cup.

“Now it is good. I am feeling no pain now. You can say that I am perfectly fit. I will understand it after the game. It’s hard to understand the situation in the field, beforehand. But, I have not felt any problem during the practicing in Dhaka,” said Shakib.

Shakib believe doing well in IPL will increase his confidence.

“All the ODI, T20 and Test series are international series. We also play three formats. The player I will have to face in World Cup, will be there in IPL. It’s a great advantage. Because, I had to play Premier League in the country as the preparation of the World Cup if not for IPL. There was no other game without this. What would be better for my preparation than such a competitive tournament like IPL”, said Shakib

“Actually it is not possible to take any preparation except the mental one until playing the game in such conditions,” he said.

“I think the most important month in this year will be May as we will be in Ireland and England at that time. That one month will be the time of real preparation,” he said.

Shakib said that he will join the national team whenever it is required and by no chance IPL can be any kind of hindrance behind it.

“No, Why would I come after IPL! There is no question of playing IPL matches if I have national assignment. I will join the team on May 3 to 4 in Ireland. I may be there even before,” said Shakib.

“It might be that I will stay at least one week in Bangladesh after the IPL ends and then will join the team in Ireland. It depends on a lot of things. I can even go to Ireland, before IPL ends. It is not possible to confirm anything right now,” he concluded
