Nine killed in road crashes

At least nine people were killed and six others injured in separate road crashes in Barishal and Narayanganj on Thursday night and Friday.

Former minister and incumbent lawmaker Rashed Khan Menon narrowly escaped another road crash at Mohakhali in the capital on Friday morning.

In Barishal, seven people, including a female college student, were killed and five others injured in a road accident in Babuganj upazila on Thursday and Friday.

Barishal Metropolitan Airport police station sub-inspector (SI) Nazrul confirmed the matter.

He informed that a bus hit a human hauler, locally known as Mahindra, from behind in front of Impel School on Barishal-Swarupkathi road around 9:45am, resulting in loss of six lives and injuries to five people.

Of the deceased, five were identified as Shila Rani, 30, a master’s first year student of Mathematics department at Brojo Mohan (BM) College, mahindra driver Sohel, 32, and others named Khokan, 40, Manik, 45, and Parvin, 35, all of Babuganj upazila.

However, the identity of another one aged about 50 is yet to be known.

Abdur Rahman Mukul, officer-in-charge (OC) of Barishal Metropolitan Airport police Station, said traffic on the highway remained suspended for half-an-hour due to the road crash.

On Thursday, a primary school student, Dip Karmakar, son of Gopal Karmakar, was killed in another road crash on Major MA Jalil Bridge in Uzirpur upazila of Barishal.

Dip was a student of Class III at Kamalapur Government Primary School.

According to eyewitnesses, Dip and his brother Partha were standing on the bridge. All of a sudden, a private car hit Dip from behind. He was immediately rushed to Uzirpur Upazila Health Complex where on-duty  doctors declared him dead.

Uzirpur police station OC Shishir Kumar Paal confirmed the matter to the daily sun.

In Narayanganj, a woman and her seven-year-old daughter were killed as a bus hit a motorbike on Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Mallikpara of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj on Thursday night.

The deceased were identified as Sanjida Begum, 26, and her daughter Jannat, 7, hailing from Darikandi in the upazila.

The Dhaka-bound bus hit the motorbike around 8:30pm, leaving the duo dead on the spot, said Narayanganj Highway police OC Abdul Quiyum.

Sanjida’s husband Jasim Uddin, who was driving the motorbike, was severely injured in the accident. Jasim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for treatment, he added.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by the Workers Party of Bangladesh said that a bus belonging to Balaka Paribahan hit the car of incumbent MP and former minister Rashed Khan Menon at Mohakhali in the capital on Friday morning.

Menon was going to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by his car.

As the car reached near Mahakhali police box around 7:30am, the bus hit his car.

Although his car was damaged but, Menon remained unhurt.

 The on-duty police sergeant stopped the bus and arrested its driver. The police officer also found that the driver had no driving licence and the bus had no valid documents. Even the bus was unfit to ply.

Later, the driver was handed over to Banani police.
