Three students among 7 killed in road crashes

At least seven people, including three students, were killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Khulna, Manikganj, Brahmanbaria, Narsingdi and Dhaka on Wednesday night and Thursday.

In Sirajganj, a college student was killed and two others were injured as a covered van hit them on Thursday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Hridoy, 17, a student of Dhukuria Technical College and son of Haidar Ali of Bhadraghat village in Kamarkhand upazila.

The accident took place around 7:30am when the chemical-laden van hit the three pedestrians, leaving Hridoy dead on the spot.

The injured were taken to Sirajganj Hospital, said Habibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kamarkhand Police Station.              

Soon after the accident, an angry mob put up a barricade on the road, halting traffic for around two hours.

The protesters set fire to the covered van in protest against the death in the road accident.

On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control, said the OC.

In Khulna, Akhi Moni, 7, a class-I student of a local madrasah, was killed when a brick-laden tractor knocked her down at Anandanagar in Rupsha upazila in the morning.

Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rupsha Police Station, said Akhi met with the tragic end while crossing the road.

In Manikganj, a man and his son were killed when a bus hit their motorcycle on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Puthuria in Shibalaya upazila around 6:15pm.

The deceased were identified as Obayed Ullah, 35, and his son Abdullah, 4, of Madhukhali in Faridpur district.

In Narsingdi, Rabbi Mia, a class-VIII student of Hossainpur Pilot High School, was killed when a covered van hit his bicycle while going to school at Boroicha in Belaboupazila around 10:00am.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy, said Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shibpur Itakhola Highway police.

In Brahmanbaria, Kadir Mia, 37, was killed and two others were injured when a truck plunged into a roadside ditch after colliding with a lorry on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Bertala in the morning.

Mohammad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Khatihata Highway Police, said the accident took place when the truck collided head on with the lorry coming from the opposite direction and fell into the ditch.

The injured were taken to local hospital, he added.

In Dhaka, a middle-aged man was killed when a covered van hit him in Paltan area of the capital on Wednesday night.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The van hit the man around 9:30 pm while he was crossing a road near Bank Asia, leaving him dead on the spot, said Saheduzzaman, inspector (Investigation) of Paltan Police Station.

Police arrested the driver and seized the vehicle after the accident, he added.
