The investigation committee formed over the killing of an election officer and six others in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari upazila visited the spot on Thursday.

The seven-member probe body is led by additional secretary Dipak Chakrabarty, also a director of Local Government Division for Chattogram region.

MA Monjur Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Baghaichhari police station, said that the probe body team had visited Noy Mile area. Later, they spoke to the victims at the upazila health complex and several election officials who were inside the vehicle during the gun attacks.

While talking to journalists, Dipak Chakrabarty said: “We have primarily come to know that it was a pre-planned ambush. They fired towards the targets at point-blank range.”

“But we cannot give details right now. We are trying to collect the evidence,” he added.

Soon after the incident, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) formed a two-member fact-finding committee.

The committee members also visited the critically injured people at the Combined Military Hospital in Chattogram.

On Wednesday, police filed a case against 40 to 50 unidentified assailants with Rangamati’s Baghaichhari police in connection with the killings.

On March 18, unidentified gunmen shot dead seven people, including two polling officials and four Ansar personnel, after the end of the second phase of the Upazila election in Rangamati.
