A suspected drug pusher was killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Comilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila early on Thursday.

The deceased is identified as Jamal Haq alias Jambu Mia, son of Haris Mia of Joynagar Village in the upazila. He had 13 cases filed against him, said Mamun-or-Rashid, officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of ‘drug peddlers’ has gathered in Dhanpur, a team of police raided the area, the OC said.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, ‘criminals opened fire, prompting the lawmen to retaliate in self-defense’, which left Jamal fatally injured. Others, however, managed to flee the scene.

Later, he was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, the police official said.
