Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s (BGMEA) Swadhinata Parishad on Thursday hoped that the upcoming election of the trade body will be free and fair, although some of its central leaders were assaulted while submitting nomination papers recently.

“We hope that voters will cast their votes to empower the apparel makers and establish democratic culture in the association and the board of director’s election is to be held on April 6 for 2019-2021” said Convener of Swadhinata Parishad Md. Zahangir Alam.

Alam made the optimism while speaking at a view exchange meeting on “Apparel Industry: Present and Future” organised by Nabarun Apparels Limited at Dhaka Club in the city on Thursday.

He, however, claimed that some people are trying to avoid voting and demanding themselves winners even before the election. “Voters will take revenge by casting votes on the election day,” he added.

Swadhinata Parishad Convener Zahangir place some 12 points at the meeting as their panel’s manifesto which, he said, will help restore the industry’s image and lead the country to achieve the status of a middle income one by 2021.

“If we are elect we will implement the 10 percent cash intensive for apparel industry,” he also said.  “If elected we will work along with the owners and labours. The apparel industry will flourish further,” he added.

Md  Zahangir Alam of denim processing plant ltd will contest at the election as panel leader from BGMEA Swadhinata Parishad and Rubana Huq of Mohammadi group will contest as panel leader from Sammilita Parishad and Forum. Both the groups nominated her with negotiation.

The election will be held for 35 posts of director. Nine directors were unopposed elected earlier.
