Three textile and apparel bodies – BGMEA, BKMEA and BTMA – at a point press conference on Wednesday expressed concerns over the government’s move to increase the gas price by around 132 per cent for industrial use.

Increase of gas price at present would adversely impact the country’s apparel and textile industry which is already beset with a number of challenges, said manufacturers from Bangladesh's apparel and textile sectors.

Against the backdrop of rising production cost and fall in product prices, the proposed increase in gas prices by 132 percent would add to the woes of the industry, said BGMEA President Md Siddiqur Rahman at a press conference on Wednesday.

He urged the government not to take any decision that may hamper the apparel and textile sectors, which act as a major driving force for the country’s economic development.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Textile Mill Association (BTMA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) jointly organized the press conference at the apparels club at BGMEA complex in the city on Wednesday.

BTMA president Mohammed Ali Khokon and Bangladesh BKMEA acting president Monsur Ahmed also spoke at the press conference.

"There is no alternative to gas in running this industry,” said the BGMEA president adding, "Due to this price hike, employment will go down, as there will be no entrepreneurs."
