BIWTA official assaulted by river grabber

An official of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has been assaulted by a local influential person during an eviction drive along the banks of the Turag in Kaundia union of Savar.

According to eyewitnesses, Kaundia Union Parisad (UP) chairman Atiqur Rahman assaulted the assistant director of BIWTA, Rezaul Karim, on Wednesday when some of its officials went to demolish the structures built illegally by the chairman.

The brawl halted the drive for about half-an-hour, they said.

Later, BIWTA joint director AKM Uddin reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

BIWTA executive Mostafizur Rahman said, “We have freed the chairman who assaulted our official as he sought pardon to the official.”

However, BIWTA on Wednesday demolished 185 illegal structures on both banks of the Turag stretching an area from Johurabad of Mirpur to Palpara.

BIWTA joint director A K M Arif Uddin and executive magistrate Mostafizur Rahman led the drive. 

On the 20th day of the drive, BIWTA bulldozed a three-storied building, 11 two-storied buildings, 23 one-storied buildings.

Apart from this, 38 semi-pucca establishments and 11 tin-shed houses were leveled to the ground by the BIWTA team.

During the drive, two acres of land were freed from the clutch of encroachers.
