Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a footbridge on Pragati Sarani where a university student was crushed under the wheels of a bus on Tuesday.
As per demand of the agitating students, the overbridge will be named after the road crash victim, Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury. While laying the foundation stone, the mayor said, “We’re deeply saddened by the death of Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury. Accepting the demands of the students, we have taken an initiative to construct the footbridge which will be named after the victim. We hope its work will be completed within three months.”
He said, “For bringing discipline on roads, our prime minister has already given necessary directives. I don’t want that any more student dies this way. I also request the DMP to identify the spots where foot overbridges should be constructed.”
Urging the students to go back to their educational institutions, the mayor said, “I request all of you to go back to your respective educational institutions. I got your demands in written form. We’ll try to implement it soon.”
During the foundation-laying ceremony of the foot overbridge, DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, BUP vice chancellor (VC) Major General Emdad-Ul Bari and others were present.
