‘Jute can be new economic growth driver for Bangladesh’

Speakers at a seminar observed that Jute can be one of the important economic growth drivers of the country if it gets proper policy support.

They made the observation at a seminar on "Diversification of Jute Goods for the Development of this Industry: Opportunities and Challenges" at DCCI on Monday.

Addressing the seminar former Adviser to the Caretaker Government Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman said that industrialisation of agriculture in this subcontinent started with jute and jute can be a new growth driver of our economy once again.

“Diversified and value added jute products have huge demand as well as it can create huge job opportunities for the country,” said the former adviser.

Minister for Textiles and Jute Golam Dastagir Gazi attended the programme, organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), as the Chief Guest while DCCI President Osama Taseer chaired the seminar.

Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman called for extensive research and positive branding on jute to create more demand in the international market. He also emphasised on diversification of jute products and Jute Paper Act for encouraging pulp production from jute. “Due to discarding of plastic bags worldwide jute gets huge opportunity to explore the market,” he added.

“We need more research and innovation for jute seed production and diversification,” he said urging all concerned to take initiatives to increase the demand of jute and jute goods in the local market as well.

DCCI President Osama Taseer said that Bangladeshi jute goods created demand in about 60 countries and earns more than USD 1 billion from jute and jute goods export.

“To increase export of jute and jute goods, we have to focus more on diversification. Presently about 235 types of jute goods are being made by our entrepreneurs,” he added.
