Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished at least 317 illegal structures in Mirpur areas in the city on Tuesday despite resistance from the land grabbers.

The drives were conducted along the riverside from Aminbazar Bridge to Johurabad of Mirpur to free the occupied land of the river.

In Gabtali area, the land grabbers stationed their bulkhead and other water transports, choking the way of BIWTA’s excavators for carrying out their drives.

The master and supervisors of the bulkheads said they cannot move their water transports to other places due to low navigability of the river. But BIWTA rejected the causes shown.

They also argued roughly with the BIWTA officials when they appeared on the spot to conduct their demolition drives.

Joint director of BIWTA, AKM Arif Uddin and executive magistrate Mostafizur Rahman led the drives.

A BIWTA official alleged the river grabbers created artificial obstacle to stop their drives in the area.

However, BIWATA demolished two two-storey buildings, 15 one-storey building, 14 boundary walls and 36 semi-concrete structures.

Apart from those, they also bulldozed 250 stalls and freed around two acres of land from the illegal occupants.
