Chairman candidates of the ruling Awami League swept the second phase of fifth Upazila Parishad polls held at different parts of the country on Monday.
According unofficial results, AL won 75 chairman posts, AL rebel candidates won 28 chairman posts, JSS (Shantu Larma) won three chairman posts, suspended BNP candidate won one chairman post and independent candidates won eight chairman posts.The polls were held in 116 upazilas of 16 districts under Rangpur, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Chattogram divisions.
Meantime, a total of 23 chairmen, 13 vice-chairmen and 12 reserved vice-chairmen candidates have already been elected unopposed.
Amid boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) voting began at 8:00 am and continued till 4:00pm.
Voters exercised their franchise in a total of 7,039 polling centres in the electoral areas.
According to the Election Commission, voting was suspended at eight polling stations for allegation of irregularities and violence.
