BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said people didn’t respond to ‘one-sided’ second-phase upazila parishad elections.
“People didn’t respond to the one-sided second-phase upazila parishad election held on Monday. They no longer consider any election under current government to be believable. This government has gone far away from people’s confidence,” he said in a written statement on Tuesday.Mirza Fakhrul alleged that the government is ‘using state machinery in a bid to make the country free from opposition as one-party ruling is the only way to survive for it’. “There is no loophole in initiatives of eliminating opposition, including BNP,” he added.
He further said the ruling party men have been ‘involved in killing in the voter-less election’. “Criminal activity has been increasing day by day due to absence of democracy and free and fair election in the country,” he said.
The BNP secretary general denounced the killing of seven people during the gun attack in Baghaichhari.
“We think the attack on people appointed for election responsibility in Baghaichhari is well planned. I’m strongly protesting and condemning the casualties,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and demanded punishment for those responsible for the incident.
