Economic Relations Division (ERD) will raise five key issues, including Rohingya and climate financing, in the upcoming spring meeting of the World Bank and IMF.

Other issues are risk of sustainable development amid climate change impacts, development of skilled manpower, the country’s overall healthcare situation, said ERD sources.

The spring meeting of the WB and International Monetary Fund will be held in Washington from April 10-15.

A 12-member Bangladesh delegation headed by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will take part in the meeting. Bangladesh Bank governor, finance secretary and ERD secretary will be on the delegation.

ERD has already sent letters to ministries and divisions concerned seeking necessary information regarding the issues.

Besides, some other important issues may also be included later along with these primarily selected priorities, ERD officials hinted.

Usually, the WB and IMF hold two important meetings every year—one is annual meeting and the other is spring meeting.

ERD officials informed that the spring meeting and some concurrent seminars create scope of meeting with high-level officials of the two global bodies.

Any countries future financing priorities can be discussed with the development partners and at the same time development partners’ interest can also be known, which plays important role in improving relations with them, ERD officials said.

“We’re taking necessary preparations for the upcoming spring meeting of the WB and IMF under the leadership of the finance minister. ERD is working on Rohingya, GCF financing and other issues,” commented an ERD high-up.

Besides this meeting, the finance minister will hold bilateral or multilateral meetings with the United Nations and other supporting organizations on the Rohingya issue, ERD officials said.

In its letter to refugee relief and repatriation commissioner, ERD sought necessary information for preparing finance minister’s speech for these meetings.

In the letter, ERD sought to know the total number of Rohingyas taking shelter in Bangladesh, including those entered earlier, information of related to male, female and children and the assistance amount to lower negative impacts and the local inhabitants with the Rohingya influx.
