Old and risky transformers are supplying electricity to different places in the capital, posing a risk of fatal accidents.

Recently, Dhaka Distribution Company (DPDC) has submitted a list of 17 overloaded and risky transformers having 900MW capacity to the power division.

Sources said the power division sought data from all power distribution companies on their risky and old transformers.

A 33KV transformer on Manik Mia Avenue is being used to supply power to parliament, but it is overloaded with electricity.

Bangabhaban 132/11KV grid substation, Narinda 132/11KV grid substation and Shyampur 132/33/11KV grid substation having a combined 321MW supply capacity are about 30 years old.

Kajla 33/11KV substation, Manikmia 132/33KV substation, Sarulia 33/11KV substation, Kamrangichar 33/11KV substation and Lalbag Natun 33/11KV have become overloaded with electricity.

DPDC Managing Director Bikash Dewan told the Daily Sun that the company is implementing a series of projects to replace risky and old transformers through implementing short, mid and long-term projects.

He said the company took a $1.5billion substation strengthening project under China credit.

Besides, another Tk 200-crore project was also taken under France government credit which will help replace old and risky transformer in Dhaka.

“We’re hopeful of replacing all risky and old transformers by 2025,” the managing director said.

He also said the company will take a long-term project after 2030 in this regard.

According to the DPDC, it has 19,340 distribution transformers. Of them, 6869 are owned by consumers while the remaining by DPDC.

The DPDC is replacing risky and old transformers in phases, the official said.

Under the improvement of the distribution in DPDC area, the company is replacing insulated conductor and risky cables at Lalbag, Bangsal, Banglabazar, Kamrangichar, Mogbazar, Tajgaon, Banasri and Maradia.

Recently, the DPDC has proposed replacing the overloaded Sangshad Bhaban substation to ensure uninterrupted power supply during a parliament season. But, the public works department said they will replace it through their own supervision, the DPDC official said.

He claimed that the company has installed an alternative switching system to ensure uninterrupted power supply to Bangabhaban and Ganabhaban.
