The country will observe the National Voters’ Day for the first time today, aiming to encourage eligible voters to enrol in the voter list and exercise their franchise.
The theme of the day is ‘Voter Hobo, Vote Debo’ [will be voters, will cast votes].The day also aims to create awareness among youth voters about democracy, election and their voting rights.
In his speech, President Abdul Hamid said observance of the day will create awareness among the people about importance of vote and their voting rights.
Welcoming the initiative, the President said such decision is appropriate and time-befitting as democracy is being practiced in almost every country in the world. He urged the eligible voters not to stay out of the voter list.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said observance of 1st March is an important day in the history of democracy of Bangladesh.
To mark the day, a procession will start from in front of the National Parliament at 9am today (Friday) and end at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital, said a press release of the election commission.
The CEC and four other commissioners will attend the procession.A programme will also be held at the Election Commission auditorium at 4 pm today (Friday). President Abdul Hamid has consented to attend the programme on the day.
The Day will also be observed across the country with rally, procession and discussion meetings at Upazila, District and Division levels.
Earlier on April 2 last year, a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the Election Commission’s proposal in this regard.
