Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to provide proper treatment for the injured in the Chawkabazar inferno in the capital.

She also asked them to provide the families of the deceased with necessary support.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to give necessary treatment to the injured and necessary support to families of the deceased,” her press secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters on Thursday.

At least 78 people were killed and scores injured badly in the devastating fire that broke out at a four-storey chemical warehouse building in Chawkbazar area around 10:40pm on Wednesday.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Opposition Leader HM Ershad, among others, expressed deep shock at the loss of the lives.

The premier conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls.

Ganabhaban sources said that the premier became very shocked over the fire incident.

“She inquired about the incident all the time and directed the authorities concerned for taking necessary measures,” a source said.

Though such fire incidents take place frequently, the authorities concerned seem reluctant to address the issue.

In 2010, at least 123 people were killed and scores of others badly injured in the Nimtoli chemical warehouse fire, leaving the nation in deep shock.

Shortly after the Nimtoli inferno, the Commerce Ministry declared an initiative to build a chemical village in Keraniganj, but the nation saw no progress in the move.
