Fire Service, NHRC form probe bodies

Fire Service and Civil Defence has formed a three-member committee to investigate the deadly fire in Old Dhaka that left at least 78 people dead and scores injured.

The members of the committee are deputy director of operation and maintenance of fire service Dilip Ghosh, DAD Abdul Halim and AD Salahuddin.

Meanwhile, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Bangladesh has formed another probe committee to investigate the Chawkbazar tragedy.

The committee members are NHRC directors Al-Mahmud Faizul Kabir, deputy director Gazi Salahuddin and members Akhtar Hossain, Prof Meghna Guhathakurta and Hiranmaya Barai. The committee has been asked to submit the report within a month.

Meanwhile, NHRC, Bangladesh chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque visited the  spot and talked to the locals and injured ones to learn about the accident. Expressing his condolence, the NHRCH chairman said: “We are deeply shocked at the deaths in the tragic incident. We’ll investigate the matter and give recommendations to the government.” The Rights body chief also urged the authorities concerned to ensure compensation to the victims’ families and effective measures for medical treatment of the injured.
