Chronology of Old Dhaka fire

The old part of the capital has long been vulnerable to fire incidents as numerous chemical warehouses, stores and shops have been established there illegally surrounding the Chawkbazar wholesale market.

Over a dozen fire incidents took place in the last 10 years with the latest one happening on Wednesday that killed at least 78 people and injured several scores.

Aug 24, 2018: A fire incident took place at a warehouse of plastic goods at Alirghat in old Dhaka’s Lalbagh. There was no report of casualties.

Jan 26, 2017: Three youth workers were injured in a blaze originating from chemical at a shoe factory in Alubazar area of Bangshal in Old Dhaka.

Mar 07, 2015: Four persons were severly injured in a fire that broke out in a chemical warehouse housed on the third floor of a six-storey building in Chhoto Katra area in Old Dhaka.

Feb 1, 2014: a fire broke out at Poly Plastic and Soap Factory in Armanitola area and the fire speared quickly due to chemical at the factory.

Sep 9, 2011:  a fire broke out in a chemical warehouse near Armanitola School in Old Dhaka.

Dec 06, 2010: Two people were burned while refilling cigarette lighters at a building storing liquid petroleum gas and lighter refill canisters on Nazimuddin Road in old Dhaka area.

Oct 28, 2010: A fire broke out in a chemical warehouse at Armanitola of Old Dhaka. There were no casualties in the incident.

Oct 05, 2010: At least seven workers died and four other were injured in a shoe factory fire at South Jatrabari in the capital. The fire erupted quickly since there was a large amount of chemical products.

Aug 22, 2010: A fire at a chemicals warehouse left three people seriously injured in a residential area of Lalbagh in Old Dhaka. The blaze started on the ground floor of the two-storey chemicals storehouse on Jagannath Saha Road.

June 3, 2010:  at least 123 people were killed in a devastating fire at Nimtoli chemical warehouse in

Old Dhaka which shook the nation. July 16, 2009: at least fifteen people were seriously injured as a factory; making plastic soles for shoes caught fire at Islambagh in Lalbagh area in Old Dhaka.

August 3, 2008: Ten people died in a blaze originating from a chemical shop on the ground floor at a house in Aga Sadek Road.
