Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Tuesday said that tough action will be taken against the chemical businessmen who keep and sell highly inflammable 29 chemicals in congested areas like Mitford and Babubazar in old part the city.

“If any of the 29 dangerous chemicals, including ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol,  Diacetone alcohol, is found in any godowns of old Dhaka, licenses will be scrapped, godowns will be sealed off and legal action will be taken against dishonest owners.

“It is very risky, as it may cause any fire incident all of a sudden,” he said.

He issued the warning while inspecting chemical godowns in Babubazar and Mitford areas in old part of the capital city.

The mayor said that they have come up with the decision to get tough with unscrupulous businessmen after holding discussion with them.

He also said, “The FBCCI and representatives of local businesses will help mobile courts to conduct drives against flammable chemicals.”

Those who will refrain from selling such chemicals will be given licences and awards, he added.

During the inspection, the DSCC awarded renewed licenses to a number of chemical godown owners.
