Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Tuesday knocked down 39 illegal structures on the second day of fourth phase of the demolition drive against encroachment on river banks.

A BIWTA team led by its joint director AKM Arif Uddin and executive magistrate Mostafizur Rahman conducted the drive in Amin Momin Housing area of Bosila under Mohammadpur in the capital.

During the drive, the team destroyed 39 illegal establishments, including three one-storey buildings, 11 semi-concrete buildings and 15 makeshift shops, said BIWTA deputy director Md Mizanur Rahman.

A Chhatra League leader was detained for creating bar to the demolition drive. He was released later.

The BIWTA started the drive on January 29 to free the rivers of the country of encroachment and pollution.

The government has taken a project to build walkway and set up demarcation pillars and other protective measures to stop such illegal practice.
