Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday expressed dismay over the quality of roads as some roads are easily damaged just within two or three months of construction after a period of rain.

“What is the necessity of constructing those roads that are damaged easily just after some rain,” he said.

Quader, road transport and bridges minister, expressed his discontent after a view-exchange meeting with the officials of Roads and Highways Department at its head office in Tejgaon in the capital.

He mentioned various problems arise just after repairing or constructing roads.

“Even small and large path holes develop, roads dip down or cracks develop but such things should be addressed,” he said.

Referring to plying of overweight vehicles on roads, the minister said, “It becomes a problem but why would the roads get damaged so quickly. There is a fault in the construction process.”

In this regard, the minister also mentioned faulty construction works of his constituency in Begumganj of Noakhali, which was investigated.

“If such thing can happen in my own district, then what is the guarantee that it won’t happen everywhere else?” he posed a question.

He instructed those responsible for ensuring quality of road construction to build roads so that it lasts long.

The minister urged everyone to make sure that there is no corruption or irregularities. He also urged authorities concerned to complete repair works before Eid-ul-Fitr as well as before rainy season so that none has to suffer.
