CHATTOGRAM: Several lakh people of different areas of the city experienced gas crisis for the second consecutive day on Sunday following damage of a gas transmission line in the city’s Patenga area.
The authority concerned of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) said works were going on to repair the damaged pipeline and the supply may restore from Monday.Sources said the main gas transmission line of the KGDCL got damaged during canal renovation works by the Chattogram City Corporation at Akmal Ali Road in Patenga area on Saturday early hours.
The KDGCL authority shut down gas supply in the area to avert any accident immediate after the incident. The situation caused several lakh people, commercial firms and industries of the Patenga, Halishahar, Karnaphuli EPZ, Chattogram EPZ, Bandar, Agrabad and adjoining areas to go without gas since then.
The residents of the areas suffered a lot as most of them could not prepare food due to lack of the gas supply. Many of them bought food from different hotels while the elderly and children were the worst sufferers of the situation, said the sources.
Contacted, the KGDCL Managing Director (MD) Kaiz Ahmad Majumder said works for repairing the damaged pipeline were going on.
“As the pipe was set up under the canal, it became tough to carry out the repair works removing water and mud,” he said.
After completion of the works the gas supply is expected to be restored on Monday, added the MD.
