Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Sunday said that a big political party like BNP has decided to boycott the forthcoming upazila parishad elections which is disappointing.

“A number of major political parties have decided not to contest the upcoming upazila elections. It’s very frustrating for us, as we always want the election to be competitive,” he said.

The CEC was addressing a training programme at the Election Training Institute in the capital’s Agargaon area.

The CEC also said that upazila election will be competitive, as many qualified persons are running for the election.

He asked the election officials to conduct the election in a free and fair way.

“You do not have a party. You will perform duties according to the constitution and the law,” he said.

Mentioning that the polling agents are an important part of the election process, the CEC urged the election officers to ensure safety and security for the agents when they return home after performing their duties.

The first phase of the 5th upazila parishad elections begins on March 10. The election will be held in 87 upazilas.
