At least six people were killed and eight others injured as a passenger bus fell into a roadside ditch after hitting a truck in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla on Sunday morning.

The tragic accident occurred around 6:30 am on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Jagonnath Digi area of the upazila, police and witnesses said.

The dead were identified as Anwar from Satkhira and Hashi Khadeja, Aslam Molla, Salam Mia and China, all from Khulna.

The wounded were admitted to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital and Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

The accident took place as a running truck collided with the Fatikchhari-bound bus, leaving the five dead on the spot and injuring eight others, said Miabazar Highway police outpost officer-in-charge (OC) Nizam Uddin.

Police recovered the bodies and sent the injured passengers to hospitals, he said.

Later another passenger succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The bus was heading towards Maizbhandari Darbar Sharif in Chattogram from Khalispur of Khulna.

The accident took place as the bus hit the truck from behind, police said. “The truck was carrying steel beams,” he said.

Meanwhile, the students of Pabna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) blocked the Dhaka-Pabna highway on Sunday for two hours protesting death of their fellow in a road crash on February 13.

The protesters took to the highway around 11:00am to realise their five-point demand, including arrest of the killer driver.

After the road blockade, they submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC) of Pabna in favour of their demands.

On February 13, Tanija Haider, a third year student of PMCH, was killed as a truck ran over her on the highway.
